Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) can help you completely change the way you run your business, cutting costs and providing more flexibility. Migrating to a VoIP phone system may seem daunting, but it’s a pretty straightforward process.

1. Evaluate Your Migration Needs

Why do you want to migrate to a VoIP? Are you running a small business and looking to cut installation and service fees? Does VoIP help employees do more online than on-site? If your employees do a lot of their work remotely, the minimal infrastructure of a VoIP system makes for easy setup and training. But you also have to ensure your company has enough network bandwidth to support internet-based phone calls on top of other online work.

2. Set up a Migration Team and a Migration Plan

Once you decide you want to migrate to a VoIP, put together a comprehensive migration plan, and set up a team to manage the process. The team should be interdepartmental, including IT professionals to implement the migration, and employees from various departments who will be using the new system. An interdepartmental team will help you make sure the migration goes smoothly, follows the plan, and benefits the whole organization.

3. Test Install

Before your VoIP goes live, test it. Make sure everything works the way it’s supposed to and look for potential bugs so you can fix them before they can become an issue in the live version of your VoIP.

4. Install

The installation process for VoIP is a little different from traditional phone systems. You don’t need to set up any hardware, and most VoIP software is plug-and-play, so your IT team should be able to install the software on your system and your employees’ devices. Once the VoIP is installed and your employees connect to it, you’re all set.

You may need to include some other steps in your migration, like planning training sessions, but this list can help you get started.

I have a OBi 110 for many years. I used it for my Google Voice and another SIP provider. But last year, the OBi is not working with Google Voice anymore. Even I flashed the firmware. It extended the life a few months.

I have a brand new OBi200. I bought it in June 2017. Cost me  US$47.46 plus tax.

The old OBi110 is much cheaper than before. I paid US$66 in 2012.

The new OBi200 Open Box

Open Box of OBi200When it is working, the device looks like below.

Look at the back of the device. There are four ports in total. Phone jack, USB port, Internet RJ45, and DC 12V.

Features of OBi200

  • Use Google Voice with the OBi and enjoy free calls inside the USA and Canada
  • Call internationally at amazingly low rates to over 150 destinations
  • Rates to China, India, and Mexico as low as 1¢ per minute – with no connection fee
  • When someone calls, ring multiple OBi devices, anywhere
  • Block unwanted nuisance and tele-marketer calls
  • Voicemail that acts like email
  • Designed, developed and supported in the USA

It is a perfect replacement for my old OBi110.

Actually, it is not a news. I knew it almost a year ago. But now it is the time.

Google Voice: Not Supported on OBi Devices After May 15, 2014

Back at the end of October, Obihai announced Google would end its support for the XMPP communication protocol. This announcement came on the heels of Google’s announcement that as of May 15th, XMPP would no longer be supported for third-party VoIP applications. The Google Voice service uses XMPP to connect the OBi to the service. With that, after May 15th Obihai will no longer support the Google Voice service on its OBi devices.

So, it is time to find a alternative service provider. Maybe I will choose one from the following:

Information technology has seen a major development in this decade that has created more innovative products to make communication faster and cheaper than we expect. Internet telephony or the (VOIP) voice over internet protocol is one of the major development that has made voice transmission more clear, fast and cheaper. Broadband service and fiber optics have facilitated the growth of VOIP technology and is expected to be used in a wider spectrum. There are a few threats or cautions like spamming, spoofing and identity threats that have been alarmed since the emergence of this technology.
1. (SPIT) Spam over internet telephony is a mix of telemarketing and spam. Calls are free or cost much lesser not just for customers but also for marketing companies. A large volume of VOIP calls and messages can pile up in your inbox which will be sent using automated programs. Also they will occupy large mega bytes of storage which can reduce the traffic of genuine and wanted messages.
2. Spoofing is a method of creating a mask or fake identity using the internet telephone. Since internet telephone use a MAC (Media access control) address for identification, spoofing of the MAC also possible. This can help hackers and attackers to make the customers believe that the call is from a known or trusted source. These calls can make the customers disclose personal information like account numbers, (SSN) Social security number and other authentic information.

3. There are chances that the VOIP data can take an unencrypted route in the internet. This gives hackers and crime software developers, a chance to re-frame the original conversation and get bits and pieces of identity information about a customer.
Any data is vulnerable to attackers on the internet. Technology before adoption needs an in-depth study which can help protect us from possible known threats. Even though there are many benefits out of the VOIP access, customers have to take efforts to learn from a VOIP guide and also update related info that can help them avoid vulnerabilities.

From VoipStunt to poivY. Now I start to use SmartVoip.
These three service providers are same compony with different name. And I also think they use same user database.
Because when I try to use same name of VoipStunt on Poivy, it show me that the user name is taken by other people.
They all provide free call to Mainland China on landline and cell when they are just launched. Later, the free cellphone call is taken away. And more later, the China is not free any more. Then I have to switch to another VOIP provider.
So if you have time to go through these three provider. It approves my point.
Voipstunt doesn’t provide free minutes to China.
poivY has free call to China, with Landline only.
SmartVoip does provide free Landline and Mobile to China.
SmartVoip has a little bit difference from the others.
It ask for EUO$15 to top up the credit instead of EUO$10.

SmartVoip also said no expire date for Credit right now, based on the FAQ.

How long does my credit last for calls?
The credit you have purchased will NOT expire.

I does not see how many days left for freedays. There is “Freedays remaining” field in poivY user account page.
The only thing I am not sure is what in the desktop client software.
It shown:

You have 88 freedays left. After this period, normal rate will be applied.

The rule of using SmartVoip is, after top up the account with 15 euros, I have 90 freedays, during this period I can call the free countries for free. After this period, my 15 euros still there, then the normal rate is applied. Then when my 15 euros credit is used up. I can top up it again. The 90 freedays re-start.

The phone connected with my VOIP adapter, SPA-2002, is always get the wrong time. You know, we live in North America, with Daylight Saving Time. The clock of phone will update depending on the time info from the VOIP adapter.
Even I change the phone set time manually, it will changed back next day.
So the setting of clock or time on SPA-2002 is the key issue.
Let’s see how I did to make it work perfectly in Canada.
1) NTP server.
I choose the Canadian NTP server pool. Enter the following server address into NTP server field.
ca.pool.ntp.org
2) TimeZone.
I am in Vancouver, Canada. Choose GMT-08:00.
3) Daylight Saving Time Rule
In the ‘regional’ tab, Daylight Saving Time Rule field enter the following data.
start=4/2/7/2:0:0;end=11/1/7/2:0:0; save=1
4) Save and it works.

The rule of DST should look like this one.
start=< start-time>;end=< end-time>;save=< save-time>
< start-time> and < end-time> are of the form: < month>/< day>/< weekday>HH:[mm[:ss]]]
< save-time> is of form: |HH:[mm[:ss]]]
< month> = 1,2,3,..,12 (for Jan, Feb, .., Dec)
< day> = |1,2,3,..,31
< weedday> = 1, 2, 3, .., 7 (for Mon, Tue, .., Sun), or 0 which has special meaning
HH = hour (0-23), mm = minute (0-59), ss = second (0-59)
< start-time> and < end-time> specify the start and end time-date of daylight saving
time and is the amount of hour/min/sec to add to the current time during
daylight saving period. The < save-time> value can be preceded by a negative (-) sign
if subtraction is desired instead of addition.
If < weekday> is 0, it means the date to start or end daylight saving is at exactly
the given date. In that case, the value must not be negative. If < weekday>
is not zero, then the daylight saving starts or ends on the on or after
the given date if < day> is positive, or on or before the given date if < day> is
negative. If < day> is -1, it means the < weekday> on or before the end-of-the-month
(in other words the last occurrence of < weekday> in that month).
Optional values inside [ ] are assumed to be 0 if they are not specified.
Midnight means 0:0:0 of the given date.
Example 1:
Starts at midnight on 1st Sunday of April; ends at midnight on the last Sunday
of October; add 1 hour (USA, N. America). Below are all equivalent rules:
start=4/1/7/0:0:0;end=10/31/7/0:0:0; save=1
start=4/1/7;end=10/-1/7;save=1
start=4/1/7/0;end=10/-1/7/0;save=1
Example 2:
Starts at midnight on last Sunday of April; ends at midnight on the last Sunday
of September; add 1 hour (Egypt):
start=4/-1/7;end=9/-1/7;save=1 (Egypt)
Example 3:
Starts at midnight on first Sunday of October; ends at midnight on the 3rd
Sunday of March; add 1 hour (New Zealand):
start=10/1/7;3/22/7;save=1 (New Zealand)

When use VOIP service with a VOIP adapter, you have to choose the codec.
The codec is very important. Unsuitable codec will make your call intermittently.
Codecs are settings used to fine-tune the audio compression of your VoIP devices.
Different codec needs different bandwidth.
The following protocol header assumptions are used for the calculations:
40 bytes for IP (20 bytes) / User Datagram Protocol (UDP) (8 bytes) / Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) (12 bytes) headers.
Compressed Real-Time Protocol (cRTP) reduces the IP/UDP/RTP headers to 2or 4bytes (cRTP is not available over Ethernet).
6 bytes for Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol (MP) or Frame Relay Forum (FRF).12 Layer 2 (L2) header.
1 byte for the end-of-frame flag on MP and Frame Relay frames.
18 bytes for Ethernet L2 headers, including 4 bytes of Frame Check Sequence (FCS) or Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC).
So the most used often protocol/codec are listed below.
Codec Name – Bandwidth Ethernet (Kbps)
G.711 (64 Kbps) – 87.2 Kbps
G.729 (8 Kbps) – 31.2 Kbps
G.726 (32 Kbps) – 55.2 Kbps
G.728 (16 Kbps) – 31.5 Kbps
So, if you use two computer and one game palyer, or Wii, and the Voip Adapter in the same home network, you’d better set codec to G.729 to save the bandwidth and get better voice quality.

I used Voipstunt as my long distance phone service provider almost two years. It gave good quality phone connection.
Now I change to poivY. A new voip provider name, but actually same company as voipstunt.
The most important reason is that China main land is the free call country in poivY.
All setting is similar to voipstunt. Let me describe how to use it.
1) Sign up the account.
2) Buy credit about US$15 to top up the account.
3) Call free in 90 Freedays to free countries or area.
Including Canada, Chian, USA, UK, etc. For full list please click here.
4) Max 300 minutes per week of free calls.
5) After 90 days, the normal rate apply.
Say, China USD0.027/min, USA USD0.02/min.
The Setting of SIP device shown as below:

SIP port : 5060
Registrar : sip.poivy.com
Proxy server : sip.poivy.com
Outbound proxy server : leave empty
Account name : your PoivY username
Password : your PoivY password
Display name/number : your PoivY username or voipnumber
Stunserver (option) : stun.poivy.com

You can still download the softphone to use through your desktop.

When I buy credit, I can not use the same Paypal account which I used in my Voipstunt.
I tried to use same paypal, but it automaticly refund to me.
It said: This transaction is refunded because we do not allow using the same paypal account on more than one user-account.
That means Voipstunt and poivY use same accounting database.
The company running Voipstund and poivY or others is Betamax GmbH & Co.KG.

I always thinking about to have a home-brewed VOIP server. Such as this one, Build a Skype Server for Your Home Phone System, it is a skype server, not exactly what I want, but still good.
Through this Skype server, you can have a small phone system in your home.
The full function of home VOIP server is based on Open-source software and free of charge.
Asterisk
With two or three VOIP card, you will have a system, you can call out, or receive incoming call.
You can also have a conference call in your home.
Do you need it?
Running on Linux.

Ok. I check the call history. Phone calls to China are charged 0.7 cent per minute. USA is still free.
I may change to other service provider, when both USA and China are not free.

So, it is time to do some research to find a second choice for backup.
Currently, Voipstunt has an un-expired credit plan.
Keep calling every day untill all free calls are not available.

Voxlib is a solution. 2013.08.29 Update: This site/service is down.

1) Install a skype and create a new account.
2) Download Voxlib client software, Vox for Skype, and Install it.
3) Setup your cellphone information in Voxlib.

Go to try it.

I have a SPA-2002 device for 8 months. I also use VOIPSTUNT as my Voip serivec provider.

The Firmware with device is 3.1.2(a). Nothing wrong.

I went to SIPURA website, and saw the new firmware there.

So, I upgrade it to new version.
Let me show you how to do the upgrade.

1) Download it from the download page. Here

2) Decompress it into a folder.

3) There are two files, spa2002-03-01-05.bin and spa2002-03-01-05.exe.

4) Get the IP address of your SAP-2002.
You can go to SPA’s voice menu by pressing **** on your analog phone and press 110#.
Your current IP will be announced.

5) Run the windows executable from windows machine. It will ask for SPA’s IP-address. It will then try to identify the SPA, and perform the upgrade.
Note: Don’t power off at this time.

The new features and improvement can be found here. It shows you the benefit to upgrade from 3.1.2(a) to 3.1.5.
