Two weeks ago. I am going to do some old-school stuff. The Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP3 installation. I am going to show you the CPU type I chose for them, for reference the CPU type.
Here is some basic information on these two mentioned Operation Systems. I knew a lot of PC users had never used Windows 2000. They weren’t even born at that time.
Windows 2000 is a major release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft and designed for businesses. It was the direct successor to Windows NT 4.0, and was released to manufacturing on December 15, 1999,[2] and was officially released to retail on February 17, 2000 and September 26, 2000 for Windows 2000 Datacenter Server. It was Microsoft’s business operating system until the introduction of Windows XP Professional in 2001.
The CPU type I chose is KVM64 in the Proxmox VE host.
The CPU instructions are very limited at the old time. I give it 2GB RAM and 2 cores.
Later I tried Windows XP SP3 virtual machine on the Proxmox Host.
About Windows XP SP3 basic information. You just need to remember it was released around June 2008. The system requirements are so low.
On Windows XP SP3, I chose x86-64-v3 as the CPU type. I gave it 4GB. But in the system, only 3GB is recognized.
Because I chose x86-64-v3, there are more CPU instructions supported.
There are some interesting facts I would like to bring here. Of course, it is for records only.
- In Windows 2000. To share a folder, then I can use another computer to access it and transfer files to it. I need to use Windows XP. Because Windows 2000 does not support SMBv2. Windows 10 has no SMBv1 which was deprecated in 2014.
- I can install Firefox 52.9.0 ESR version on Windows XP SP3 to access most of the website now. Including this website. The built-in browser IE 6 does not work because the SSL version and Encrypt are not supported by IE 6. If the website can be accessed without https, but HTTP, you can still use IE to access it.
- For Windows XP SP3, I can enable RDP, or remote desktop protocol to access it from my Windows 10 desktop. With Sound.
- So, for me, I feel Windows 2000 is not usable anymore in the current Internet world. But for Windows XP SP3, there are still some old programs, that single-use machines can use it. If these machines are not connected to the Internet, that is OK.
- When I move the mouse to play the Minesweeper, it is just like I am back to twenty years ago through the time machine.
